The Pittsburgh Steelers have made significant changes to their quarterback lineup from 2023 to 2024, introducing Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, and Kyle Allen. In terms of production, the Steelers saw improvements despite ending the season with similar results. They increased their average passing yards per game from 186.1 in 2023 to 192.0 in 2024, along with enhancing touchdown passes from 13 to 21 and reducing interceptions from nine to six.
Russell Wilson was instrumental in this improvement despite missing six games due to a calf injury. He averaged 225 passing yards per game and achieved 16 touchdown passes against five interceptions. He also contributed with his running ability, gaining 155 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
The team performed well with Wilson at quarterback until an injury sidelined key wide receiver George Pickens for three games. During Pickens’ absence, they managed only one win against two losses but struggled further upon his return.
Justin Fields stepped up during Wilson’s absence, averaging 184.3 passing yards over six starts and leading the team to a 4-2 record. Fields threw five touchdown passes with one interception and rushed for an additional five touchdowns.
Both quarterbacks brought different styles; Wilson focused more on pocket passing while Fields utilized his rushing skills effectively.
As all three quarterbacks are set for unrestricted free agency in 2025, it is unlikely that all will be re-signed by the Steelers. Team President Art Rooney II acknowledged both quarterbacks’ capabilities but indicated a preference to sign one of them moving forward: “I think they’re both capable quarterbacks,” said Rooney of Wilson and Fields. “And my preference would be to sign one of them.”
Rooney highlighted potential draft considerations as part of their strategy: “We’ve got a whole quarterback room to fill… I wouldn’t be surprised if we look in the draft as well.”
