The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for the upcoming NFL season with notable changes and developments within their roster. Jaylen Warren, a running back for the team, is preparing to take on a more significant role following the departure of Najee Harris in free agency. Acknowledging the potential increase in workload, Warren has adapted his offseason training regimen accordingly.

“I approached this off season differently,” Warren stated at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. He emphasized focusing on longevity rather than traditional training methods, highlighting the importance of availability in the game.

Warren’s performance over his first three NFL seasons has been commendable, participating in 48 out of 51 games. Despite a hamstring issue that caused him to miss two games in 2024, he managed to produce substantial yardage both on the ground and through receptions.

Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith acknowledged the gap left by Harris’s departure, noting that there are “a lot of carries and catches to replace.” Smith outlined that a regular season generally involves “500-plus carries,” emphasizing the need to allocate these effectively among players.

Head coach Mike Tomlin expressed confidence in Warren’s ability to handle an increased number of touches, stating simply, “Certainly.”

In addition to changes in offensive roles, defensive strategies are also under review. Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick highlighted communication issues from last season as a focus area for improvement during OTAs. He stressed the need for clear execution and communication within the defense.

Meanwhile, rookie Derrick Harmon has made an impression by starting with the first-team defense during minicamp. Defensive line coach Karl Dunbar confirmed Harmon’s position as a starting defensive tackle but noted that actual playtime would depend on various factors throughout the season.

Special teams see competition as punter Cameron Johnston returns from injury. After being sidelined early last season due to a knee injury, Johnston is set to compete with Corliss Waitman for the punting position. Special teams coordinator Danny Smith praised Waitman’s performance last year but acknowledged Johnston’s potential impact given his past achievements.

The Steelers’ roster continues to evolve as they prepare for training camp at Saint Vincent College on July 23. Historical precedents suggest potential additions or changes could still occur before the season begins.
