The latest edition of “Asked and Answered” addresses a range of questions from Pittsburgh Steelers fans, covering topics from free agency rules to draft strategies and coaching staff updates.

One question focused on the franchise tag in the NFL. If a player receives the non-exclusive franchise tag, he can negotiate with other teams. Should he sign an offer sheet elsewhere, his original team has 14 days to match the offer or receive two first-round picks as compensation if they decline.

Regarding decision-making within the Steelers organization, it was clarified that the general manager does not have sole authority over draft picks or trades. Major decisions must be approved by President Art Rooney II. As Rooney stated during the search for a new head coach: “I don’t think I anticipate really changing our structure or chain of command. I expect the new head coach, like Bill Cowher, like Mike Tomlin, like Chuck Noll, will be very involved in preparing for the draft and working closely with Omar and his staff and making sure we’re ready.” This reflects a collaborative approach rather than one led solely by the general manager.

On quarterback competition, there was skepticism about immediately handing starting duties to either Mason Rudolph or Will Howard without further evaluation. The response noted that while Rudolph is seen as a capable backup and Howard has college experience, performance at the NFL level remains unproven.

A fan asked about Ed O’Neill’s brief time with the Steelers. O’Neill, better known for his acting career, signed as an undrafted rookie after playing at Youngstown State but was waived before participating in any preseason games.

When asked about attending events such as the NFL Combine and preferences for potential draft picks at No. 21 overall, it was shared that coverage would occur from UPMC Rooney Sports Complex this year. It was also noted that no decisions have been made regarding which player might be selected with that pick.

Another question suggested signing Malik Willis as a backup quarterback at above-market value. The answer indicated skepticism about Willis accepting a backup role or receiving a contract exceeding $20 million per season without being designated as a starter.

The discussion also touched on bye weeks in the NFL schedule. It was pointed out that perceived unfairness is common due to various scheduling factors such as night games and travel demands. The Steelers’ past Super Bowl wins came despite varying bye week placements.

A suggestion to focus on defensive line picks in upcoming drafts was addressed by noting recent investments in players like Derrick Harmon and Yahya Black through previous drafts, questioning whether further significant resources should be allocated there.

Finally, an updated list of Coach Mike McCarthy’s staff was provided across offense, defense, special teams, and strength & conditioning roles.

Notable figures such as Terry Bradshaw and Joe Greene have been honored in their Hall of Honor (official website), which is showcased at Acrisure Stadium’s Hall of Honor Museum (official website).
