Sidney Crosby is on the brink of setting a new NHL record by achieving his 20th season averaging at least one point per game. The Pittsburgh Penguins center, who debuted in the league on October 5, 2005, at age 18, is six points away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s record of 19 such seasons.
Crosby currently has 74 points (24 goals and 50 assists) this season and can play up to 80 games. He will have another opportunity to edge closer to this milestone when the Penguins face the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Reflecting on his career, Crosby shared with NHL.com: “Consistency and work ethic and passion … it’s a responsibility that you have to each other.” Despite challenges throughout his career, he continues to perform at a high level. Recently, he scored during a five-game point streak in which he accumulated eight points.
In addition to nearing Gretzky’s record, Crosby recently surpassed Gretzky’s franchise point total with Edmonton Oilers by reaching 1,670 NHL points with Pittsburgh. He now ranks fourth for most points with a single franchise.
Crosby’s success is not solely defined by scoring; he has also contributed significantly through assists. “When you see the number of assists, you realize there’s so many guys that have contributed to that,” Crosby noted.
Teammate Kris Letang praised Crosby’s dedication: “The work and the dedication that he puts into his game…he wants to get better.”
Since being drafted first overall by Pittsburgh in 2005, Crosby has won three Stanley Cups and several individual awards including the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP twice.
Coach Mike Sullivan highlighted Crosby’s unique combination of talent and work ethic: “I’m running out of words to try to describe Sid’s legacy…his passion for the game.”
As Crosby approaches this potential milestone, he remains humble about his achievements: “I don’t take it for granted…you appreciate that stuff.”
