Rep. Summer Lee, who represents Pennsylvania’s 12th district in the U.S. Congress, has recently addressed issues of legal equality and student rights through a series of social media posts.
On July 21, 2025, Rep. Lee wrote, “Our laws have never been neutral. The U.S. Code has written out and marginalized people—and not by accident. That’s why I reintroduced the Equality in Laws Act to enshrine gender equality once and for all. Inclusion must be intentional, and our laws must reflect everyone.”
The following day, on July 22, 2025, she discussed a meeting with Mahmoud Khalil: “I had a productive meeting with Mahmoud Khalil today who was illegally detained by the Trump admin. Students continue to be wrongfully disciplined for exercising their First Amendment rights and protesting a taxpayer-funded genocide in Gaza. Later that same day, Rep. Lee posted another message regarding transparency in democracy: “This should not be the norm in a democracy. The people deserve the truth! https://t.co/ndQBMoRjVV”
Rep. Summer Lee has served in Congress since 2023 after replacing Mike Doyle and previously served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 2019 to 2022. Born in Pittsburgh in 1987 and currently residing in Swissvale, she holds degrees from Pennsylvania State University (BA) and Howard University (JD).
