Rep. Summer Lee, a U.S. Congress member representing Pennsylvania’s 12th district, has voiced her opinions on recent political developments in a series of tweets posted in late April 2025. Lee, who has been an active figure in politics since her days in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, often speaks out on issues related to education, democracy, and racial equality.
On April 29, 2025, Lee shared her personal experience as a “first-gen, working-class Black student” who relied on student loans to advance her education. She criticized the GOP budget, saying, “This GOP budget would’ve slammed that door shut on me—and now it will for future generations. We should be expanding access to college, not widening the achievement and racial wealth gap.”
On April 30, 2025, Lee celebrated a recent win for constitutional freedoms, particularly in the context of former President Trump. She tweeted, “This is a victory for our first amendment protections and the fight against Trump’s authoritative reign. Every other political prisoner wrongfully detained—Mahmoud, Rümeysa, Badar, and so many others—must also be released.” This highlights her dedication to civil liberties and support for those she considers political prisoners.
Later that day, Lee commented on Trump’s lasting impact with a critical tweet about his 100-day tenure in office. She wrote, “100 days of Trump: where the ultra-wealthy cash in while democracy erodes. Education attacked. Families terrorized. Groceries no cheaper. But we’re still here, fighting to build a government by and for the people—not the oligarchs in the White House.” Her remarks emphasize her ongoing commitment to challenging what she views as undemocratic practices.
Summer Lee, born in Pittsburgh in 1987, has served in the U.S. Congress since she replaced former member Mike Doyle in 2023. She holds a BA from Pennsylvania State University and a JD from Howard University, illustrating her academic and professional journey to Congress.
