MOBILE, Ala. – The Senior Bowl practices this week could play a significant role in determining the third quarterback selection for the 2025 NFL Draft. Cam Ward from Miami (Fla.) and Shedeur Sanders from Colorado are currently considered top prospects.
The Pittsburgh Steelers might show interest in drafting a quarterback, as all three of their quarterbacks from the 2024 season are not under contract for 2025. Team president Art Rooney II expressed a preference to re-sign either Russell Wilson or Justin Fields, with the possibility of adding another quarterback through the draft. “I think they’re both capable quarterbacks. And my preference would be to sign one of them,” Rooney stated on Monday.
Rooney also mentioned the importance of having a backup quarterback whose skills align with those of the starter. Several quarterbacks at the Senior Bowl possess scrambling abilities and need to demonstrate proficiency in an NFL-style offense.
Jalen Milroe from Alabama emphasized appreciating each quarterback’s unique qualities and aims to showcase his versatility. He is noted for his running ability but needs to prove consistency as a passer after a challenging 2024 season.
Tyler Elgersma, representing Laurier University, is among the quarterbacks competing at the Senior Bowl. At 6-foot-4 and weighing 217 pounds, Elgersma threw for over 4,000 yards in 2024 and expressed excitement about proving himself at this level. “It’s a very special opportunity for me,” he said.
The challenges faced by these quarterbacks include learning new offenses quickly and adapting to taking snaps under center—skills that some did not practice extensively in college.
On another note, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin observed impressive performances from defensive line players during warm-up drills, particularly Kentucky’s Deone Walker. Walter Nolen of Mississippi aims to stand out by being disruptive on the field and showcasing his skills through practice performance.
