The NFL landscape often revolves around the pursuit of a franchise quarterback, a concept especially relevant to teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers, currently navigating their fourth offseason without Ben Roethlisberger. Comparisons are frequently drawn with the Green Bay Packers’ successful transition from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers. However, the Packers drafted Rodgers in the first round of the 2005 draft not out of immediate necessity, but because he was available. After sitting on the bench for three years, he took over from Favre, leading to a 6-10 record in his first starting season. Only in his third year did Rodgers achieve a Super Bowl victory, illustrating the challenges of replacing a Hall of Fame quarterback.

Post-Roethlisberger, the Steelers have a 29-22 record, comparable to teams that recently lost franchise quarterbacks. Since the year 2000, multiple teams, including the Denver Broncos and New Orleans Saints, have struggled post-retirement of their Hall of Fame quarterbacks, often failing to achieve significant playoff success. For example, Denver went 25-23 after John Elway’s departure and 20-28 after Peyton Manning’s retirement.

In contrast, the NFL is considering changes to the Dynamic Kickoff Rule introduced for the 2024 season, which reportedly reduced head injuries on kickoffs by over 40%. Proposed amendments include moving the touchback spot from the 30-yard line to the 35-yard line and allowing onside kicks at any game point if the team is trailing. This modification could impact situations like Kansas City’s inability to attempt an onside kick in Philadelphia’s Super Bowl win.

Furthermore, the competition committee has suggested expanding replay use to rectify specific on-field calls, such as those on hits to defenseless players and roughing the kicker. While efforts to enhance ruling accuracy are ongoing, challenges remain in identifying which incidents should be subject to review.

In an update on compensatory picks for the 2026 NFL Draft, the Steelers are poised to gain several selections, including a fifth-round pick following Russell Wilson’s move to the Giants. These additional picks could offer strategic leverage in future trades.

The upcoming 2025 NFL Draft has been abuzz with player measurements, notably Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe’s hand size and LSU lineman Will Campbell’s arm length. Measurement discrepancies have become more intriguing in the context of draft positioning, influencing prospects’ potential draft stock significantly.
