After being drafted first overall by the Pirates in 2023, Paul Skenes has made a significant impact in Pittsburgh. He was named the National League Rookie of the Year and is now a leading contender for the Cy Young Award. Recently, Skenes became the first pitcher in MLB history to start the All-Star Game in each of his first two seasons.
Sidney Crosby, captain of the Penguins, has been following Skenes’ career closely. “I’ve been following him,” Crosby said, recalling when Skenes nearly achieved his first no-hitter last year. Crosby noted that even within the Penguins’ locker room, they discuss Skenes’ performances.
Earlier this year, Crosby and Skenes met at Pat McAfee’s ‘Big Night Aht’ held at PPG Paints Arena. Crosby remarked on Skenes’ physical presence and maturity: “First thing that stands out, he’s a big guy… seeing how mature he is, you can tell he takes it really serious.”
Crosby believes that Skenes is well-equipped to handle challenges ahead. Reflecting on his own experience as a young talent entering professional sports, Crosby said: “It’s probably challenging, but at the same time, I think it’s a good challenge.”
Skenes attended his first NHL game shortly after meeting Crosby and witnessed him score a goal and an assist against Washington. Impressed by Crosby’s reputation and connection with Pittsburgh fans, Skenes expressed admiration: “He’s a guy that kind of transcends the sport… definitely looking up to him now.”
Both athletes share mutual respect and have become notable figures in Pittsburgh sports.
