The Pittsburgh Penguins are set to host “Penguins Pledge Night,” presented by U.S. Steel, on Tuesday, March 18, during their game against the New York Islanders at PPG Paints Arena. This event is part of the Penguins Pledge, a sustainability initiative launched in 2023 aimed at enhancing social, economic, and environmental sustainability efforts.
The initiative involves collaboration with several Champion Partners and Impact Partners to reduce environmental impact and promote sustainable practices. The Champion Partners include The Coca-Cola Company, EQT, Indra Energy, PPG, U.S. Steel, and Wesco. The Impact Partners are Bradenton Area CVB, Davey Tree Expert Company, Duquesne Light Company, Excelitas, Neighborhood Ford Store, and Waste Management.
Fans attending the game will receive a Penguins beach towel made of rPET (post-consumer recycled plastic), courtesy of PPG. This gesture aligns with both the Penguins’ and PPG’s commitment to sustainability. Additionally, fans can participate in activities at the DICK’S Sporting Goods Wall of Champions Hallway behind Section 112. These activities include viewing a live webcam of U.S. Steel’s bald eagles nesting near Allegheny County’s Irvin Plant and interacting with National Aviary experts alongside live penguin ambassadors.
In partnership with PPG, the Pittsburgh Penguins support the Environmental Charter School’s involvement in the national “2 Million Cans Recycling Contest.” During this contest period from October 1 to April 30, 2025, elementary students collect aluminum cans for recycling. All aluminum cans from the March 18 game will be donated to Environmental Charter School for inclusion in their count.
PPG Paints Arena stands out as the first NHL venue to achieve LEED Gold Certification due to its various sustainability initiatives. In cooperation with Aramark and 412 Food Rescue, all unused food from the arena is redistributed throughout Pittsburgh communities. Last year alone saw over 23,000 pounds of surplus food donated. The arena also maintains a comprehensive recycling program that includes electronics and batteries while utilizing PathoSans—a chemical-free cleaning product produced on-site.
During recent offseason upgrades at the arena, over 40,000 pounds of steel were recycled during scoreboard construction projects. Additionally installed LED lighting has resulted in more than a 40% reduction in electricity usage compared to previous systems—efforts contributing towards membership within both Pittsburgh’s 2030 District & Green Sports Alliance.
Tickets for Tuesday’s “Penguins Pledge Night” are available online through designated channels while additional information regarding broader Penguin-led initiatives can be accessed via their official webpage dedicated specifically towards this cause.
