The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced the signing of forward Melvin Fernstrom to a three-year, entry-level contract. The announcement was made by Kyle Dubas, President of Hockey Operations and General Manager.
Fernstrom, 19, played the 2024-25 season with Örebro HK in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) and their J20 Nationell team. In 48 games with the SHL team, he scored eight goals and nine assists for a total of 17 points, leading all league rookies. With the J20 Nationell team, he played 12 games, scoring 11 goals and seven assists.
Over two years from 2023 to 2025, Fernstrom appeared in 54 SHL games with Örebro HK, recording eight goals and nine assists. In three years from 2022 to 2025 with the J20 Nationell team, he played in 66 games and scored a total of 82 points. His standout season came in 2023-24 when his performance helped secure a silver medal for his team.
Internationally, Fernstrom represented Sweden at the World Under-18 Championship in 2024 where he earned a bronze medal with eight points over seven games. He also participated in the Hlinka Gretzky Cup that year.
Originally drafted by the Vancouver Canucks as the third-round pick (93rd overall) in the 2024 NHL Draft, Fernstrom was acquired by the Penguins on January 31.
