The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced the signing of defenseman Alexander Alexeyev to a one-year contract. The announcement was made by Kyle Dubas, President of Hockey Operations and General Manager for the team.
Alexeyev, aged 25, is contracted through the 2025-26 season with an average annual value set at $775,000. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 229 pounds, Alexeyev spent the previous season split between the Washington Capitals and their American Hockey League affiliate, the Hershey Bears. During this time, he participated in eight NHL games and three AHL games, contributing two assists while playing for Hershey.
Throughout his career, Alexeyev has appeared in 80 NHL games with Washington over parts of four seasons starting from 2021. He has recorded one goal and seven assists totaling eight points. His experience also includes 14 Stanley Cup Playoff games where he notched one assist. In addition to his NHL experience, Alexeyev has played in 145 AHL games exclusively with Hershey, achieving six goals and 46 assists resulting in a total of 52 points with a plus-31 rating since turning professional in 2019.
Before his professional career began, Alexeyev competed in the Western Hockey League with the Red Deer Rebels from 2016 to 2019. Over these three seasons, he played in 135 junior games amassing a record of 21 goals and 80 assists amounting to a total of 101 points.
Hailing from St. Petersburg, Russia, Alexeyev earned a bronze medal at the World Junior Championship in 2019 and also took part in the World Under-18 Championship back in 2016.
Originally drafted by the Capitals as their first-round pick (31st overall) during the NHL Draft of 2018, Alexeyev now brings his skills to Pittsburgh under this new agreement.
