Joel Blomqvist, a promising young goaltender for the Pittsburgh Penguins, recently returned to the NHL and received commendations for his performance. During his second stint in the league, he played against Washington on Saturday night. Despite the team’s 4-1 loss, Blomqvist’s efforts were praised.
“I felt pretty good,” said Blomqvist after facing 33 shots during the game. Bryan Rust, a teammate, noted that Blomqvist “was awesome” and highlighted his crucial saves at key moments.
Blomqvist was called up earlier this week following Tristan Jarry’s placement on waivers. Penguins President of Hockey Operations and GM Kyle Dubas expressed confidence in Blomqvist’s abilities: “We think over the past year and a half…he’s earned the right to have a go at it.”
In Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (WBS), Blomqvist had an impressive record with a 2.93 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage over 12 games this season. He emphasized continuous improvement: “We have a good team down there…Just trying to improve every day.”
The Finnish goaltender is focused on making his mark in the NHL. “I’m really happy to be back with the team,” he stated. His previous season in North America was notable; he achieved AHL All-Star status with excellent stats and was named to the AHL All-Rookie Team.
Blomqvist joined training camp aiming for an NHL spot despite competition on the depth chart. His opportunity came when Alex Nedeljkovic suffered an injury during preseason play, allowing him to debut successfully against Detroit on October 11.
Mike Sullivan praised Blomqvist’s athleticism: “He competes hard on pucks…his lateral mobility…is exciting.” Dubas commented on his mental resilience: “When he has a bad stretch or bad game, he is able to put a stop to it.”
As Blomqvist continues his journey in professional hockey, both management and teammates see potential for growth in his role within Pittsburgh’s lineup.
