Pittsburgh Penguins Head Coach Dan Muse spoke with the media on Apr. 23 following the team’s 5-2 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 3, leaving Pittsburgh down three games to none in their first-round playoff series. Muse outlined his approach for keeping players focused as they prepare for Game 4, which is scheduled after a practice day on Friday.
The Penguins are facing elimination and need a win to extend their season. The team has a history of strong competition and multiple playoff appearances, according to the official website. “We have to win a hockey game. So, we’ll have a practice tomorrow, get ready for that game. Then, we’ll go into that game, we need to win a game. And so, that’s entirely where the focus is right now,” Muse said.
Muse discussed how emotions ran high after the recent loss but emphasized channeling those feelings constructively: “There’s emotional swings that I think are always going to be there… But for right now, honestly, it’s going to be a focus on having a great practice tomorrow.” He also addressed lineup changes and offensive challenges faced by key players during the series.
The coach commented on using time between games effectively: “It’s one of those where you can never control the schedule… With whatever the schedule is and however it lies, you have to make it good for you and for your group.” He acknowledged that while defensive pairings have remained consistent throughout this series at PPG Paints Arena—a multipurpose venue in downtown Pittsburgh—the staff would continue evaluating all options ahead of Game 4.
The Penguins are recognized not only for Hall of Fame figures among players and executives but also as an important part of Pittsburgh’s sports culture with strong fan traditions and community ties according to their official website. The franchise is owned by Fenway Sports Group which manages its business operations.
Reflecting on expectations both inside and outside the locker room this season, Muse concluded: “The outside expectations have been what they’ve been since day one for us… nothing’s changing. I’ve said from the start of this, we just got to win a hockey game.”
