The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced the acquisition of defenseman Matt Dumba and a 2028 second-round draft pick from the Dallas Stars. This trade, revealed by President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kyle Dubas, sees defenseman Vladislav Kolyachonok moving to Dallas.

Matt Dumba is under contract through the 2025-26 season with an average annual value of $3.75 million. Last season, Dumba played for the Dallas Stars, recording one goal and nine assists in 63 games. He ranked fifth on the team with 60 blocked shots and sixth with 70 hits.

Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 185 pounds, Dumba has spent parts of 12 NHL seasons playing for teams including Dallas, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, and Arizona. In his career spanning 737 regular-season games, he has achieved 84 goals and 174 assists. His best performance was in the 2017-18 season when he scored a career-high of 50 points.

Dumba also brings experience from his participation in Stanley Cup Playoff games with Minnesota and Tampa Bay, where he contributed five goals and ten assists over 54 games.

A native of Regina, Saskatchewan, Dumba has represented Team Canada internationally multiple times, winning a gold medal at the World Junior Championship in 2014.

He was initially drafted by Minnesota as the seventh overall pick in the first round of the NHL Draft in 2012.

This acquisition adds to Pittsburgh’s selection for future drafts. With this new second-round pick from Dallas along with their original seven picks plus San Jose’s third- and fifth-round selections for the upcoming drafts until 2028, Pittsburgh now holds a total of ten picks for that year’s NHL Draft. Over three upcoming drafts they will have amassed a total of twenty-nine draft picks which includes seventeen selections within first three rounds.
