Newborns at Allegheny Health Network’s West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh were dressed as characters from the “Peanuts” comic strip to mark the 75th anniversary of the iconic series. The celebration featured nine infants outfitted as familiar characters, including Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, and Linus. The babies were placed in a medical-grade bassinet designed by AHN to look like Snoopy’s red doghouse.
“This anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate all the magic and possibility of childhood, and a special reminder to the entire AHN labor and delivery team of what a privilege it is to help bring these beautiful little ‘peanuts’ into the world,” said Marcia Klein-Patel, MD, PhD, OB/GYN and Chair of AHN Women’s Institute.
Charles M. Schulz launched “Peanuts” in October 1950. The comic quickly grew from seven newspapers to international fame through both its print run and popular television specials such as “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” Although original publication ended in 2000 after 50 years, “Peanuts” continues in syndication.
Schulz based his characters on personal experiences, which contributed to their lasting appeal across generations. The personalities he created—such as Charlie Brown’s empathy or Lucy’s independence—have become cultural touchstones.
“Perhaps these babies will grow to be empathetic like Charlie Brown, independent like Lucy or even musically inclined like Schroeder,” said Dr. Klein-Patel. “But no matter who these children will become, we are honored that they got their start at AHN West Penn Hospital.”
AHN West Penn Hospital was recently recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of America’s top 50 hospitals for obstetrics and gynecology for the fourth consecutive year (https://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals/area/pa/west-penn-hospital-6230605). The hospital delivers about 4,000 babies annually and operates a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for critically ill newborns.
The hospital also houses specialized programs such as the AHN Women’s Behavioral Health department and the Alexis Joy D’Achille Center for Perinatal Mental Health. Opened in late 2018, this center has established itself internationally for providing comprehensive care for perinatal mood disorders—including postpartum anxiety and depression—and offers one of few intensive outpatient therapy programs nationwide.
Parents from various parts of Pennsylvania participated in the event with their newborns taking on names inspired by Peanuts characters: Bryan Berry (“Charlie Brown”) from Mars; Maeve Spindler (“Snoopy”), Lainey Zukowski (“Peppermint Patty”), Kenna Eibeck (“Sally”), Revan (“Woodstock”) all from Pittsburgh; Brody Weber (“Linus”) from Moon; Hadley Grace Hillard (“Lucy”) from Ruffsdale; Penelope Kuntz (“Schroeder”) from Emsworth; Aviana Gieger (“Franklin”) from New Kensington.
