Before Melvin Fernstrom joined the Pittsburgh Penguins through a trade involving Marcus Pettersson and Drew O’Connor, Kyle Dubas, the team’s executive, had already identified him as a promising talent. Fernstrom was initially drafted by Vancouver in the third round as the 93rd overall pick.
Dubas commented on Fernstrom’s potential: “I think the thing that stood out is that he was known as an offensive, scoring winger,” adding that Fernstrom demonstrated a clear understanding of his developmental path during interviews.
Fernstrom’s performance in Sweden earned him recognition when he was named Rookie of the Year in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) after a strong season with Ă–rebro HK. Reflecting on this achievement, Fernstrom said it was an exciting experience and credited his parents for instilling humility in him.
The young player from Balsta, Sweden, signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Penguins on June 13. He expressed enthusiasm about learning new skills both on and off the ice during the 2025 Development Camp at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex.
In recent seasons with Örebro HK’s J20 Nationell Team, Fernstrom recorded impressive statistics: 42 goals and 82 points over 66 games. His early performance in the 2024-25 campaign led to his promotion to Örebro’s SHL team where he continued to excel by leading all SHL rookies in scoring with 17 points across 48 games.
Fernstrom described adapting to playing against more experienced opponents: “It was more about getting used to having my game with the pro guys.”
Tom Kostopoulos, Director of Player Development for Pittsburgh Penguins, noted that despite team challenges, Fernstrom showed consistent improvement and impressed coaches with his ability to learn from veteran teammates.
Kostopoulos praised Fernstrom’s potential due to his size and skill set: “He could be a real offensive threat…and he’s got a really wicked shot.”
Next season will see Fernstrom returning to play for Ă–rebro HK where expectations are high for him to expand upon his successful rookie year. Dubas reiterated their confidence in Fernstrom’s development path: “He is executing upon everything that he said, which is for us an important developmental attribute.”
