Kyle Dubas, President of Hockey Operations and GM for the Pittsburgh Penguins, expressed optimism for the team’s future despite falling short of the playoffs this season. He cited the development of younger players as a positive sign. “Maybe we had less points than we had last year, but I feel like we’re slightly better positioned as we move ahead because of the younger players here,” Dubas mentioned during his season-ending media session on Monday. He emphasized the goal of returning to “legitimate contention” instead of merely making the playoffs. “It’s not trying to find a way just to sneak into the playoffs,” he said.
Dubas outlined a plan focused on acquiring assets and prospects to build a competitive team. Highlighting players like Ville Koivunen and Rutger McGroarty, Dubas stressed the need to develop and utilize young talent. He referenced the Washington Capitals, pointing out their development of mid-level talent, as an inspiration for the Penguins. “We’re trying to rapidly get to that point,” he noted about building a stronger core.
Dubas also discussed the team’s current state in goaltending, defense, and forward positions. He assured that competition would be strong during training camp, with emphasis on performance improvement from players like Tristan Jarry and Alex Nedeljkovic. On the defensive side, he acknowledged the left side as an area needing enhancement and seeks improvements from younger prospects.
Regarding the team’s forward prospects, Dubas highlighted a need for consistency and enhancing the supporting cast around key players like Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby. Dubas addressed questions about specific individuals, including coach Mike Sullivan, affirming his intention to meet with him soon to discuss future plans. He described Sullivan as “an elite-level coach” and emphasized the importance of aligning players’ performances with the team’s ambitions.
Other players mentioned included Erik Karlsson, highlighted as a critical figure for the team’s future, Rickard Rakell, Bryan Rust, and Matt Grzelcyk, who are valued for their contributions. Dubas concluded with a focus on the prospects expected to make strong pushes in the upcoming season.
“We continue to (be) committed to our plan and program to return there as urgently as possible,” Dubas reiterated, emphasizing a concise plan to regain contention in upcoming seasons.
