Early in the fourth quarter of Iowa’s 13-10 victory over Nebraska, the Hawkeyes were trailing 10-3. Throughout the game, Nebraska’s defense focused on limiting Iowa’s junior running back, Kaleb Johnson, to just 45 yards on 17 carries, marking his lowest output of the season.
Despite this, Johnson managed to make a crucial play. On second-and-13 at the Iowa 28-yard line, quarterback Jackson Stratton passed to Johnson in the flat. Johnson broke multiple tackles and completed a 72-yard touchdown run that accounted for nearly half of Iowa’s total yardage in the game.
“Ironically, the biggest play came on a pass play, not a run play with Kaleb,” said Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz. “We threw a little swing screen out to the right… My point is, in that game… we needed to do something. And he just made a play that gave us a chance to be in the game.”
Iowa ran only 41 plays compared to Nebraska’s 76 and was outgained by Nebraska with only five first downs against Nebraska’s twenty. Despite these challenges, Iowa finished their season with an 8-5 record.
Kaleb Johnson has been known for his significant contributions throughout his career. His high school coach Nate Mahon recalled Johnson’s performances against Fairfield and Colerain where he displayed his ability to break tackles and score.
Johnson was selected by Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith expressed excitement about acquiring Johnson: “(We are) excited about getting Kaleb Johnson in here… One of the more instinctive backs that I’ve watched… (He’s a) perfect fit regardless of whatever run scheme you’re running.”
Johnson expressed enthusiasm about joining Pittsburgh: “I love it here,” he said during rookie minicamp. “I can’t wait to get to play on Sundays with these guys…”
Before joining Iowa, Johnson had committed to California but changed his decision after visiting Iowa. His former high school coach Mahon played a role in convincing him: “I convinced Caleb to go up there… he changed his commitment, and the rest is history.”
At Iowa, Johnson rushed for 1,537 yards and scored 21 touchdowns last season. He credited his teammates for their support: “My offensive line… helped me make those big plays…”
Ferentz noted Johnson’s growth: “He came here with some pretty good ability… The biggest thing… is just his approach…”
With Najee Harris leaving Pittsburgh in free agency, there’s an opportunity for Johnson alongside Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell. “I’m just going to go in there as a rookie,” said Johnson.
