The Pittsburgh Steelers have selected Ohio State linebacker Jack Sawyer in the fourth round of the NFL Draft. Coach Mike Tomlin expressed his admiration for Sawyer, highlighting his strong relationship with football and his positive reception among teammates. “Love Jack Sawyer,” said Tomlin. “It’s easy not only in terms of his resume, but his relationship with the game, his approach to football business, how he’s viewed and received by his teammates.”
Sawyer has been passionate about football since childhood, a love that was influenced by his father, Lyle Sawyer. “My dad is a football junkie,” said Sawyer. He recounted early memories of watching games with his father and playing football from a young age.
Sawyer’s enthusiasm for the sport was evident from an early age when he played in youth leagues in Ohio. He fondly remembers backyard games that sparked his enduring love for the game.
Steelers’ defensive coordinator Teryl Austin described Sawyer as a player who excels during crucial moments, a trait that resonates with him. “I always try to prepare myself and get myself ready and best fit for those big moments where the game matters the most,” said Sawyer.
At 6-5 and 259 pounds, Sawyer is known for both physicality and strategic thinking on the field. He emphasized the importance of studying opponents to gain an edge during games. “Being a student of the game is something I take a lot of pride in,” he noted.
Sawyer aims to contribute significantly to the Steelers’ defense by learning from seasoned players like T.J. Watt, Nick Herbig, and Alex Highsmith. His competitive nature drives him to be at his best every day as he fulfills a lifelong dream that began in Pickerington’s backyards.
“I want to prove myself and prove to people who doubted that they were wrong,” said Sawyer.
