Learn more about cornerback Darius Slay in this edition of Five Fast Facts.
Darius Slay was signed to a one-year contract at the start of free agency after being released by the Philadelphia Eagles. He was originally drafted by the Detroit Lions in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, as the 36th overall selection. Slay spent his first seven seasons with the Lions before playing five seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles following a trade in 2020.
Slay appeared in two Super Bowls with the Eagles and was part of their Super Bowl LIX Championship team this year.
His college career began at Itawamba Community College in Fulton, Mississippi, before he attended Mississippi State. As a senior at Mississippi State in 2012, he earned All-SEC honors by recording 40 tackles, including 26 solo stops, and five interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown.
After Super Bowl LIX, Slay received the key to his hometown of Brunswick, Georgia. A parade was held in his honor where the mayor spoke about his impact on the community. In 2018, he opened an academic center called Big Play Slay Center of Excellence in Brunswick.
Slay prefers to be called ‘Slay’ or ‘Big Play Slay.’ Only his grandmother has permission to call him by his given name of Darius, and his father calls him Junior.
