Derrick Harmon, 6-foot-4½ and weighing 313 pounds, hails from Detroit and is set to begin his NFL career after being selected as a first-round defensive tackle. Harmon began his college journey at Michigan State but transferred to Oregon following the dismissal of the coach who recruited him, Mel Tucker. Now 21, Harmon has completed four years in college, spending three with the Spartans and one with the Ducks.
In his college career, Harmon made a significant transformation, reducing his weight from 350 pounds during his time at Michigan State. His performance improved markedly in 2024, recording 10.5 tackles for a loss and 5 sacks after modest contributions in his initial years, which helped him earn Third-Team All-Big Ten honors during his tenure at Oregon.
His athletic prowess was evident at the NFL Scouting Combine held in Indianapolis, where he clocked a 4.95-second 40-yard dash, showcasing the explosive athleticism that observers had noted in his playing style. Draft analyst Dane Brugler from The Athletic emphasized Harmon’s energetic efforts as a key asset, noting it as his “calling card when chasing.” Harmon’s consistency was demonstrated by his 38 consecutive game appearances and 29 starts in his final three seasons, following his freshman year where he participated in just four games.
Various experts have praised Harmon’s abilities on the field. NFL Network reporter Stacey Dales highlighted his “smooth approach” and agility at the Combine. Meanwhile, NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah described Harmon as “one of the most disruptive players in the country,” noting his penchant for breaking through the line of scrimmage. Lastly, Brugler characterized Harmon as a dynamic and disruptive player, versatile enough to fit different NFL schemes from one- to five-technique positions.
