The Pittsburgh Penguins’ significant others wore custom-designed gray patchwork jackets during the team’s 2026 playoff run, with the garments delivered ahead of Game 1 in April. The jackets were created by Ashley Harris, a designer based in metro Detroit, who worked closely with Kelsey Rust and Melinda Karlsson to develop personalized pieces reflecting both team pride and individual style.

The initiative highlights how expressions of team spirit have evolved beyond traditional fan gear. Custom apparel like these jackets helps foster community among families connected to the team and showcases creativity within sports culture.

Rust said, “Ashley absolutely nailed it. She took something that could’ve just been a simple team piece and turned it into something that felt really personal and elevated. Every detail felt intentional, from the design to the fit to the little custom elements that made each jacket feel special to the girl wearing it.” She added that Harris balanced honoring the Penguins brand with creating stylish items “we’d genuinely be excited to wear for years to come.” Rust also described how working together on this project built excitement leading up to its completion: “It’s such a fun way for everyone to express their pride and celebrate their love for the team. It’s not just about the final product, but …the sense of community it creates among all of us.”

Harris managed a tight deadline by hand-delivering finished jackets directly in Pittsburgh before Game 1. She called it “the craziest, most insane project I have ever worked on” via her social media accounts and thanked those involved: “I want to thank the Pittsburgh Penguins ladies a million times more for giving me this opportunity… It has been the honor of a lifetime.”

The Penguins are recognized as an important part of Pittsburgh’s sports culture with strong traditions and ties within their community according to their official website. The organization is known for its numerous playoff appearances, division titles, Hall of Fame players and executives according to its official website. Home games are played at PPG Paints Arena in downtown Pittsburgh according to their official website, while Fenway Sports Group oversees business operations as reported by their official site.

As expressions of fandom continue evolving across professional sports leagues, projects like these highlight new ways fans—and families—celebrate teams beyond game days.
