Steelers President Art Rooney II has received the Leigh Steinberg DeNicola Humanitarian Award. The award was presented on Saturday during Steinberg’s annual Super Bowl event. It recognizes leaders in the NFL and athletics who are dedicated to giving back and creating positive social impact.

Rooney is known for his ongoing support of both the Pittsburgh community and charitable efforts in Ireland, reflecting his family’s heritage. Leigh Steinberg said in his nomination, “The dedication you have shown to both the Pittsburgh community and to Ireland, a country that means so much to your family, exemplifies your leadership and generosity to creating meaningful change. Your commitment to social justice, education, health and community resilience demonstrates the profound impact of your philanthropic efforts.”

Rooney serves as a long-time member of the Board of the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania, working on programs that help people across different age groups. He helped establish the Art Rooney Scholarship Fund after his grandfather’s passing; this fund provides scholarships for students from Pittsburgh’s North Side through an annual race. Rooney also chairs the Board of Directors at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

Under Rooney’s leadership, the Steelers participate in several charitable initiatives benefiting local organizations such as UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program, Chuck Noll Foundation for Brain Injury Research, and Cancer Bridges through their largest fundraising event, Steelers Style.

He also oversees the annual Ireland Funds Pittsburgh Gala—an event started by Dan Rooney Sr.—which continues to raise funds for charities in Ireland.

“I am honored to receive the Steinberg DeNicola Humanitarian Owner Award this year,” said Rooney. “I have always appreciated Leigh Steinberg’s commitment to the community and in particular the way he’s always encouraged his players to be involved in the community.”
