The ‘On The Clock’ team of Matt Williamson, Mike Prisuta, and Max Starks discussed on Mar. 17 the leading defensive tackle prospects for the upcoming 2026 National Football League Draft, which is scheduled to take place in Pittsburgh this April.
This analysis comes at a time when teams are seeking strong defensive line talent, but experts say this year’s draft class may lack high-end options at the position. The discussion highlights how recent Super Bowl champions have relied on depth along the defensive front rather than individual stars.
Williamson said that “this is a tough offseason to need serious defensive tackle help,” noting limited options both in free agency and the draft. He ranked Caleb Banks from Florida as his top prospect despite Banks suffering a broken foot recently, followed by Lee Hunter (Texas Tech), Kayden McDonald (Ohio State), Peter Woods (Clemson), and Domonique Orange (Iowa State). Williamson described Banks as having “a truly rare combination of size, length, and power” but acknowledged injury risks.
Prisuta emphasized the importance of having multiple quality linemen by referencing recent championship teams: “Those teams not only had star players on the defensive front, to me, even moreso, they had waves of guys,” said NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah during Combine coverage. Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald added: “You want to be waves of defense… And to play that style you need waves of defensive linemen.” Prisuta’s rankings placed Hunter first due to his run-stopping ability and production at Texas Tech and Central Florida. McDonald was second after earning First-Team Associated Press All-America honors in 2025. Other names included Woods, Orange—described as having “the anchor to play landlord over the A-gaps against double-teams”—and Banks.
Starks noted that while there may not be many blue-chip players available this year, there are several prospects who can fill specific roles for teams needing run stuffers or pocket collapsers. His top pick was McDonald for his versatility against both run and pass plays. Starks also highlighted Banks’ natural traits and listed Peter Woods and Lee Hunter among his favorites.
The Pittsburgh Steelers will host this year’s draft at Acrisure Stadium, where their Hall of Honor Museum displays artifacts celebrating franchise history according to the official website. The Steelers have achieved six Super Bowl championships according to their official website and honor notable figures such as Terry Bradshaw and Joe Greene in their Hall of Honor as listed on their official website. The team also engages with fans through historical celebrations as outlined on their official website.
As anticipation builds for April’s draft event in Pittsburgh, observers will watch closely how teams address needs along the defensive line amid what analysts describe as a challenging year for finding elite talent.
