The Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition will offer Saturday colonoscopy appointments during March in recognition of national colorectal cancer awareness month. The initiative aims to provide more convenient scheduling options for individuals who may have difficulty arranging procedures during the work week.

Appointments are available on select Saturdays at several AHN locations across Western Pennsylvania, including Bethel Park Surgery Center, Monroeville Surgery Center, Westmoreland Endoscopy Center, and Wexford Surgery Center. To schedule an appointment, patients can call 412-515-2723. Space is limited.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer among both men and women in the United States. However, it is also considered one of the most preventable types of cancer. Gastroenterologists note that regular screening enables the identification and removal of polyps from the colon before they develop into cancer.

AHN recommends that individuals at average risk begin screening with a colonoscopy every ten years starting at age 45. Alternatively, patients may use an annual at-home stool-based FIT test, but a positive result requires a follow-up colonoscopy.

This marks the ninth consecutive year AHN has provided Saturday screenings in March as part of its effort to improve access to preventive care.

Most health insurance plans cover colonoscopies, but patients are advised to check with their providers regarding specific coverage details. Preparation instructions will be given upon scheduling.

Colonoscopies are performed at 23 locations within AHN’s network. For weekday appointments during regular hours, individuals can call (412) DOCTORS. Additional information about colorectal cancer awareness and screenings is available on the AHN website: https://www.ahn.org/lp/colorectal-cancer-awareness.
