Allegheny Health Network (AHN) has announced the opening of a new diagnostic imaging center at Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) in Pittsburgh. The facility, which cost $100 million and spans 50,000 square feet, aims to improve patient access and experience with advanced imaging technologies.

AGH serves as a key referral center for medical and trauma care, providing essential imaging services to numerous patients each year. Jeffrey Mueller, MD, interim chair of the AHN Imaging Institute and division director of cardiothoracic imaging, emphasized the importance of these services: “From rapidly diagnosing stroke, to precisely planning cancer treatment, to confirming the presence or progression of cardiovascular disease, and countless other applications, imaging and radiology services are fundamental to exceptional patient care.”

The new center is staffed by board-certified radiologists along with trained technologists, nurses, and support staff. It offers a wide range of imaging services including X-ray, ultrasound, interventional radiology, CT scans, MRI scans, PET/CT scans among others.

A notable feature is the NAEOTOM Alpha CT scanner available at AGH. This photon-counting scanner is one of only two in Western Pennsylvania and delivers high-quality images with reduced radiation exposure. Additionally, the center houses two 3T MRIs that provide improved clarity and faster scan times.

The facility also includes an interventional radiology suite with angiography rooms that allow minimally invasive procedures such as angioplasty and stenting. As a Comprehensive Stroke Center, AGH can offer rapid therapy for stroke and aneurysm patients using this technology.

Over recent years AHN and Highmark Health have invested around $400 million into enhancing their Imaging Institute’s capabilities across the region. Recent renovations include a $12 million upgrade at AHN Allegheny Valley Hospital’s imaging department and a $4.6 million expansion at AHN Jefferson Hospital’s Breast Center.

AHN’s Imaging Institute recently achieved Diagnostic Imaging Centers of Excellence designation for its 36 facilities across multiple states—a first among adult imaging centers in these regions.

Walk-in X-ray services are available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., while appointments for other services can be scheduled via MyChart or by calling (412) DOCTORS.
