Allegheny Health Network’s Wexford Hospital has received a 5-star rating from the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for the second consecutive year. This distinction makes it the only hospital in Western Pennsylvania to earn the highest possible rating for overall quality.

The CMS five-star rating is awarded based on performance in areas such as mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, and timely and effective care. In 2025, fewer hospitals received this top rating compared to the previous year—291 nationwide or about one in ten hospitals. The national average is three out of five stars.

Launched in 2014, the CMS star ratings are updated annually and help patients compare hospital quality more easily when making healthcare decisions.

Earlier in 2025, AHN Wexford was also recognized by CMS as one of the nation’s quietest hospitals at night for the fourth consecutive year. The hospital achieved five stars for cleanliness, nurse communication, and ensuring patients understand care instructions upon discharge.

AHN Wexford Hospital also recently earned an ‘A’ grade from Leapfrog for patient care quality and safety. Leapfrog grades nearly 3,000 general acute-care hospitals twice each year based on their efforts to prevent medical errors and harm to patients. More information about Leapfrog’s grading system can be found at https://www.leapfroggroup.org/ratings-reports/safety-grade.

The hospital opened in 2021 and has accumulated several awards since then. It received a Press Ganey ‘Human Experience Guardian of Excellence Award’ earlier this year for scoring above the 95th percentile nationally in patient experience. In addition, its emergency department was selected as a Lantern Award recipient by the Emergency Nurses Association alongside AHN Jefferson Hospital.

“Allan Klapper, MD, president of AHN Wexford Hospital said: ‘At AHN Wexford Hospital, our priority is delivering an exceptional patient experience built on a foundation of safety and quality. This 5-star rating, along with our other achievements, is a direct result of the hard work and dedication of our entire team. We believe our neighbors deserve access to the best possible care, and we’re honored to provide that in their community.’”
