Kalathil K. Sureshkumar, MD, medical director for the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program at Allegheny General Hospital, was honored with the Medical Achievement Award by the National Kidney Foundation during its ‘Kidney Gift of Life Honors’ in March, according to an April 6 announcement from Allegheny Health Network.

The award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to kidney health and transplantation. Dr. Sureshkumar’s work in transplant nephrology has been recognized for advancing kidney transplant services and patient care at Allegheny General Hospital.

Khaled Nashar, MD, chief of nephrology at AHN, said, “Dr. Sureshkumar has been a driving force behind the growth and success of the transplant program at AGH. He has consistently advocated for patients, especially those in underserved communities, to ensure they have access to life-saving transplants. His commitment to expanding opportunities for patients in need truly embodies the spirit of this award.”

Dr. Sureshkumar has provided clinical care throughout his tenure at AGH and mentored residents and junior faculty members while authoring over 100 peer-reviewed papers that have received national recognition. He is also a professor of medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine and a member of the Allegheny County Medical Society.

“It is an immense privilege to be recognized by the National Kidney Foundation with this award,” says Dr. Sureshkumar. “My passion has always been to improve the lives of patients and to expand access to life-saving transplantation. This award strengthens my resolve to continue advancing patient care here at AHN.”

April is observed as National Donate Life Month each year as part of efforts to raise awareness about organ donation.
