Allegheny Health Network (AHN) has announced the appointment of Anthony X. Baroni, DO, as the new chief medical officer of AHN West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh’s Bloomfield neighborhood. Dr. Baroni will lead the medical staff and oversee clinical operations to maintain high standards of patient care and quality.

Dr. Baroni has been part of AHN since 2001, initially joining Allegheny General Hospital and the former Suburban Hospital as an attending physician. Over two decades, he has held various leadership roles at West Penn Hospital.

Currently, Dr. Baroni is involved in several capacities including serving as the medical site director for the WPH Hospitalist Program and co-medical director of the stroke program at WPH. He also holds academic positions as an associate professor at Drexel University College of Medicine.

His educational background includes a pharmacy degree from Duquesne University School of Pharmacy and a degree in osteopathic medicine from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine at West Penn and is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Brian Johnson, MD, president of WPH, commented on Dr. Baroni’s appointment: “As a hospitalist, Dr. Baroni is deeply familiar with all aspects of clinical operations at West Penn… He is a seasoned leader with a proven track record of clinical excellence.”

West Penn Hospital features 356 beds and offers numerous services including an emergency department, obstetric care, advanced gynecological surgery, and more specialized centers such as its Autoimmunity Institute and Skin Cancer Center.
