Allegheny Health Network’s West Penn Hospital Burn Center is preparing to host its annual Camp KOALA, a summer camp designed for children and teenagers who have suffered burn injuries. This year, the camp will run from June 7 to June 11 at Camp Kon-O-Kwee Spencer in Beaver County, Pennsylvania.
Camp KOALA, which stands for Kids Overcoming, Adapting, Learning and Achieving, offers a variety of activities such as swimming, fishing, hiking, archery, arts and crafts, team-building games, wall climbing, and peer support groups. The camp aims to provide a supportive environment where campers can build self-esteem and foster camaraderie.
Ariel Aballay, MD, medical director of the AHN Burn Center stated: “Camp KOALA is more than just a summer camp; it’s a vital part of our burn care program.” He emphasized the rewarding experience for clinical staff who reconnect with former patients in this setting.
Linda Leonard, BSN, RN, CBRN, CCRN and Director of the West Penn Burn Camp noted: “The friendships formed at Camp KOALA are truly special.” She highlighted how these bonds help campers navigate life with burn injuries.
Since its inception in 1986 by AHN West Penn Hospital’s Burn Center and funded by various donors including firefighter groups and businesses among others; the camp has been free for participants. The upcoming theme “Slay Your Dragons” will feature Medieval and Renaissance-era themed activities alongside other events like relay races with Pittsburgh Firefighters.
Burn injuries rank as one of the top causes of non-fatal childhood injuries globally. According to the American Burn Association approximately 286 thousand individuals seek medical attention annually due to burns within America alone.
