The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) has recognized the 4 South Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at AHN Saint Vincent Hospital with a silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence. This award highlights the unit’s dedication to improving patient outcomes and aligning with AACN’s Healthy Work Environment Standards, particularly in communication, collaboration, and staffing.

The 4 South ICU, focused on adult, medical/surgical critical care, is a component of the hospital’s broader 61-bed intensive care program. This program also encompasses neonatal, cardiac/neuro, and other medical/surgical care units.

Dr. Chris Clark, President of AHN Saint Vincent, expressed pride in the ICU’s achievement, stating, “We are incredibly proud of the 4 South Intensive Care Unit for achieving the prestigious Silver Beacon Award. This recognition underscores their tireless efforts to provide the highest quality care while fostering a supportive and collaborative work environment.”

The Beacon Award for Excellence is designated for three years and aligns with national criteria similar to the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program, the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, and the National Quality Healthcare Award.

AACN President Jennifer Adamski commended the caregivers at AHN Saint Vincent for exceeding the standards required for the award. “The Beacon Award for Excellence recognizes caregivers in outstanding units whose consistent and systematic approach to evidence-based care optimizes patient outcomes,” she remarked.

The silver-level award indicates that the 4 South ICU has met evidence-based benchmarks in several key areas, including leadership structures, staffing, communication, knowledge management, and outcome measurement.
